Most Influential Hairstyles Throughout History

Just as clothing trends changed throughout the decades, so did the various hairstyles. Each decade has a significant hair style that makes the era recognizable. Here are some of our favorites:

The 1970’s

The Feather Cut: This notorious 70’s hairstyle was made famous by Farrah Fawcett. This hairstyle consisted of short, “feathery” layers that had a lot of volume. This was the most popular and long-lasting hairstyle of this decade.

Sleek and Straight: This popular hairstyle of the 70’s is quite opposite of the Farrah Fawcett do. This style consisted of a middle hair part with very long straight locks. This look was rocked by Cher and is making a comeback in 2017 by young women like Kendall Jenner.

The 1980’s

Big and Bleached: This iconic style gets its name honestly. The 80’s were known for its giant, blonde locks. With the help of hairspray and a small comb, anyone could obtain this look by teasing their hair. Madonna rocked this look on MTV in the 80’s.

Unconventional colors: Eccentric colors were all the rage during this decade. Celebrities such as Cyndi Lauper flaunted neon hair colors like orange, yellow and pink. Sometimes all at once!

The 1990’s

The “Rachel”: This look coins its name from the popular TV series Friends. Rachel is played by actress Jennifer Anniston and sported a shoulder-length cut full of choppy layers.

Crazy Confusion: This name encompasses many unique styles. The confusion refers to the popular styles of this decade including: crimping, feather extensions, spiked short hair, braids and the famous “leave two strands out of your ponytail” style. The Spice Girls were famous for their distinctive styles and hairdos.

The 2000’s

Beach Waves: This look became popular in the mid 2000’s when MTV aired Laguna Beach. This hit TV show went into the lives of privileged high school kids in California. That is when the world met Lauren Conrad. Conrad looked like the cookie cutter Cali girl with long blonde and tussled waves. The unperfected curls look gained popularity soon after.
