Fish with high mercury
Some fish can cause thinning hair and brittle nails. The reason being, they may contain high-levels of mercury and if a person were to eat a lot of it, the result may be hair loss. Examples of fish that contain these high doses are swordfish and mackerel.

Sugar
It is a known thing that too much sugar can be bad for you. We have grown up with the constant reminder of the villain sugar. However, did you know why? Besides the risk of cavities, eating a large amount of sugar everyday causes blood sugar levels to increase as well. It becomes a domino effect. The rise in sugar results in a rise of insulin your body pumps-out. Not only that, but it also increases the levels of androgens. Androgen is the male hormone that can shrink hair follicles in both men and women.

High-Glycemic Foods
Starchy white breads, pastas and cakes can trigger similar responses as sugar.

Too much vitamin A
Too much vitamin A may cause hair loss. No – this is not a typo. Ultra high doses of an individual vitamin A supplement can be dangerous. Alternative recommendation is to take a daily multi-vitamin instead.

Little protein
Your hair and nails are made of protein. Your body needs protein every day for different functions, but unfortunately, our bodies don't store protein. Therefore, it's necessary to intake a certain amount of protein to keep your body running strong. Protein can be found in not only meat, but also from beans, tofu, spinach, lentils and more. Fun fact- foods with a particular amino acid that creates keratins is also helpful; for instance, pork, broccoli, wheat germs and red peppers.

Too little iron and zinc
Lacking in both zinc and iron can lead to hair and nail problems. These minerals found in red meats, some seafood and some beans are essential to the formulation of keratin. A neat trick to check your zinc level is to check your nails. The little white flecks in your nails are a good indicator for a lack of zinc in your diet.

Happy snacking!

Amongst our offerings of every proven solution is our Laser Hair Therapy. Low-level Laser Hair Therapy (LLLT) is a revolutionary, non-surgical solution for both men and women whom are suffering from the devastating effects of hair loss.

A safe and effective way to stop your hair from thinning, thickens your existing hair, and re-grows new hair. The low-level lasers are “soft” lasers (or “cold” lasers). These lasers do not have the thermal-component to cut, burn, or vaporize. LLLT has been approved by the FDA for the promotion of hair growth and is a completely safe.

The goal of Laser Hair Therapy is to increase circulation of the blood to the base of the follicle and to stimulate the hair organs (nerves, muscles, and the growth center of the hair follicle). Over time, this process helps to strengthen weakened hair follicles and breaks up the buildup commonly found from the production of DHT. With Laser Hair Therapy, you can achieve thicker, fuller, shinier, and healthier looking hair.

Benefits of Laser Hair Therapy Treatment:
  • Increased blood flow to the scalp based on microcirculation
  • Increased nutrient supply to enhance hair growth
  • Slowing down and/or stopping the progression of hair loss
  •  Repaired and improved hair shaft quality
  • Relief of scalp conditions such as psoriasis and seborrhea

Are you losing large clumps of hair in the shower? These hair loss signs may just be your hair going through its natural stages of life. It’s common to lose hair while you’re brushing, showering, or styling your hair because once the hair dies, it falls out and a new strand is there to replace it. You’ll never notice that you even lost the hair when you look in the mirror. However, sometimes the hair won’t grow back or may start to thin all over. This could be a much more serious condition called Androgenetic Alopecia or better known as male or female patterned baldness.

There are many reasons why a woman can lose her hair. For instance, your hair loss could be due to genetics. Genetics plays a huge role in the chemical makeup of a person. To find out if your hair loss could be genetic, it would be good to do some digging. Look at photos of your grandparents, great grandparents and even your parents. Do they show signs of balding? Talk to them as well to see if they ever experienced hair loss or hair thinning at an early age or even at all. If they did, the fact of the matter is that your hair loss is probably genetic. If your hair loss is due to genetics there are several options a women has to restore her hair. She can get a hair transplant, a hair replacement, or even extensions to make her hair full and healthy again. Visit TransitionsIndy.com to schedule a free consultation today.

A woman may also lose her hair due to hormone changes. After experiencing sudden changes in hormones it may cause the hair to fall out in clumps. Some good examples of this are pregnancy or even menopause. During pregnancy and breast feeding, a woman’s hormone levels are extremely high. After the woman finishes breast feeding hormone levels may drop back down to their normal state and this may cause drastic hair loss.

Many women are frequently dieting or trying to lose weight. However, if this is done in an unhealthy matter it too may cause hair loss. Going on a crash diet could make you lose weight, but it could also encourage hair loss. Improper dieting drains the body of the nutrients and minerals it needs to produce new hair cells.

Hair loss can affect women of any age or ethnicity. It doesn't discriminate. However, don’t let hair loss affect your life. Don’t lose confidence or get depressed. Get answers. There are many solutions available to women who suffer from any type of hair loss. Hair loss procedures can be non-surgical or surgical. It depends on the type of hair loss you’re experiencing to decide which treatment is best for you. The best way to find out how to get your hair back is to talk to a hair loss professional at Transitions of Indiana. Visit TransitionsIndy.com

This is Gunner, Dave Gundaker to be exact. While it is very likely that you recognize his face, you would find it easier to identify his voice if you heard it. Gunner is an afternoon DJ on WFBQ Radio (Q-95).

Gunner recognized the signs of hair loss in his mid-forties. He noticed there was thinning and receding that was occurring quite rapidly. This discovery left a not-so-pleasant feeling in Gunner, so he decided that this would not define who he is. He would take the reins on his hair loss situation and proceeded to visit Transitions of Indiana.

At Transitions of Indiana, we offer every proven solution designed specifically to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual client based upon the criteria of their desires, expectations, as well as a customization to their specific lifestyle. Our trained technicians and stylists combine their technical expertise and artistry to provide the hair replacement systems that are virtually unnoticeable.

For Gunner, the best solution to his problem was Laser Hair Therapy, with an inclusion of scalp treatments. Laser Hair Therapy is a method recognized by hair restoration physicians as a device that can restore hair. While it may not regrow all of your hair, it may help awaken your hair from a dormant state and extend the amount of time you have the hair.

Gunner recently appeared on Indy Style to share his experience with hair loss and how Laser Hair Therapy helped restore his hair. One of our consultants, Melissa Greene, joined Gunner on Indy Style to show how Transitions' Laser Treatment Program is helping men and women in Indianapolis restore their thinning hair. Their segment can be seen on our website at https://TransitionsIndy.com/patient/Gunner/.

His progress has been quite pleasing to him as he now has thicker hair after only undergoing half of his treatment program. Results may vary.

When most people think of the arrival of autumn and winter, their thoughts turn to the changing of the leaves, trendy “in-season” boots, cute hats, etc. Nevertheless, with the good, comes the annoying. Different seasons require different hair care techniques. When autumn arrives, hair tends to get dry, brittle and dull. Here are some tips that will keep your hair from falling short this season!

·         Deep Condition regularly
  • Heat and friction interfere with the natural structure of hair. In addition, while shampooing gets your hair clean, it can also strip your hair of its natural oils.

·         Trim
  • Get rid of the damaged and brittle hair from summer. Do it often because it will prevent the damage from moving up and causing further damage like split ends.

·         Use Less Heat
  • Being indoors will be warm enough to dry your hair. However, if you feel the need, go to a professional who will know how to accommodate temperatures to different hair types. If styling yourself, make sure that you use a nourishing heat protective spray or leave-in conditioner to safeguard your hair.

·         Towel Dry
  • If you blow-dry your hair too often, it can lead to hair breakage.

·         Exercise and Drink Water
  • Stay healthy; do not go into hibernation mode.

·         Hats and headscarves
  • Both options are a good source of protection and very stylish!

If years of styling has caused you to lose your hair, visit TransitionsIndy.com to schedule a FREE hair and scalp evalutaion!

There is a great event approaching…no it’s not Halloween, although I cannot wait to create my Doctor Who costume—the event I’m speaking about is both for an amazing cause and shows awesome Colt Pride.

October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it is getting a lot of support from our favorite team throughout the month. So… to commemorate it, the Colts are uniting with other teams in the NFL’s national, “A Crucial Catch”, initiative by encouraging their fans to join them in recognizing the survivors and in raising awareness for the disease that, unfortunately, threatens the lives of millions of women each year.
Let’s throw some facts out there:
- In 2014, an estimated 232,030 cases of  invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. alone.
- For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
- About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
- Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers.
Visit ww5.komen.org for more information.

Many people are affected by this and not the just the ones who have the disease. Breast cancer also impacts the lives of family and friends. Join the effort. Get involved. Raise Awareness.

We've all experienced those moments in the supermarket, pharmacy or department store when it's time to choose a new hair care product. We begin to ask ourselves, “What’s the difference between these two brands?” and follow it up with, “is the difference really worth that much more? It’s all soap anyway, right?” Well, in fact choosing the store brand, or other significantly less expensive hair products can actually make a difference in performance. Bargain shopping is always a wise route, but when it comes to hair treatment, cheaper is not always better.

If choosing the right hair care products isn't daunting enough, imagine trying to choose one if you are wearing a wig or a hair replacement system. In this instance, it is wise to consult with your hair replacement clinic for a recommendation. Hair replacement specialists, such as the ones at Transitions of Indiana are familiar with your natural hair type, wig or hair replacement system, as well as your lifestyle, level of personal activity and a host of other factors that can help them make a professional recommendation.

Although, inexpensive products may seem more beneficial for your wallet, this is only a short-term fix. In order to maintain healthy hair, it's a good idea to discuss your options with a professional hair care specialist. Ensure your investment and hair is well taken care of by choosing Transitions of Indiana for your hair care needs. Visit TransitionsIndy.com to schedule a FREE hair and scalp analysis today!

If you look into nutrients needed for healthy hair and skin, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and the foods that contain them pop-up in almost all nutrition guides. So, what are they?

Nutrients Needed:

Vitamins
Vitamin C is a builder of the protein collagen. If you have watched or read ads for skin care products you may know that collagen is our skin’s primary connective tissue. When your skin does not get enough collagen, it sags and bags. Vitamin C is also an excellent antioxidant with properties capable of vaporizing free radicals (harmful chemicals) in the body. Free radicals damage body tissue, including hair follicles and skin. http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/skin/vitaminC/

Vitamin A is a healer. It helps repair and restore cells that might have been damaged. One way to get enough Vitamin A is to eat foods packed with beta-carotene, an antioxidant our liver converts into vitamin A.

Another skin “doctor” is Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps the body repair itself, prevents scarring, and is recommended for shiny, healthy looking hair. Vitamin E pumps up our red blood cells so they can haul more nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles and skin.

Vitamin B-Complex is an important supplement to add to your daily diet for overall health. B-Complex contains vitamins B5, B2, and biotin, all which promote cell growth.

Fatty Acids and Minerals
Essential fatty acids, Omega-3s and Omega-6s (GLA), help heal and moisturize skin and hair. Many of us do not get enough Omega-6 or GLA (gamma-linolenic acid). GLA is a moisturizing agent said to reduce hair loss, and is a natural treatment for dandruff, brittle nails, PMS and arthritis.

There are two mighty minerals that may help keep your hair and skin conditioned, known as Zinc and Selenium. Zinc promotes skin repair, fights acne and keeps the complexion looking fresh. The other mineral, Selenium, joins forces with vitamin E to hunt down free radicals and regulate metabolism. The E-selenium team also assists the body in properly processing food to help transport nutrients to our hungry cells.

Food Suggestions

VITAMIN C: Citrus fruits, cherries, blueberries, kiwi, red peppers, or black currants
VITAMIN A: Dairy products, dried apricots, or mangos
BETA-CAROTENE: Carrots, green leafy veggies, dried apricots, sardines, mackerel, or other oily fish
VITAMIN E: Spinach, watercress (green leafy veggies), almonds, olive oil, or sunflower seeds
B VITAMINS: Wheat germ, a lot of fruits and vegetables, mushrooms
FATTY ACIDS: Oily fish (mackerel, wild salmon), black currants, flaxseeds, or evening primrose oil (black currant and evening primrose oil are especially good for omega-6, or GLA)
ZINC: Nuts, oysters, or red meat
SELENIUM: Cottage cheese, eggs, Brazil nuts, or wholegrain breads

Lichen Planopilaris is an inflammatory disorder that occurs when a person’s immune system attacks their skin or mucous membranes. The condition is not contagious and what triggers its onset is unknown. In mild cases, at home care or no care may be needed. It most often affects middle-aged adults.

Scalp Symptoms and Hair Loss

Although Lichen Planopilaris is rare, it is one of the common causes of scarring hair loss of the scalp. Lichen Planopilaris typically appears as smooth white patches of scalp hair loss, where no hair follicle openings can be seen in the areas of hair loss. At the edges of these patches there may be scale and redness, allowing the hair to be easily pulled out. Small patches may merge to form larger irregular areas. Lichen Planopilaris usually progresses slowly.
Symptoms may include:
  • Itchiness
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Discomfort
  • Burning
  • Temporary or permanent hair loss
  • May result in scarring or scalp discoloration

Treatments for Lichen Planopilaris:

Doctors may use medication to reduce itching and promote skin healing. Although, the condition typically clears up on its own, symptoms may last a few months up to several years.

To Manage Lichen Planopilaris, Doctors May Use:

   Corticosteroids, topical, oral, or injections
Retinoids, or synthetic vitamin A, used orally or topically
   Non-steroidal ointments or creams
   Antihistamines, oral or topical

Home treatments may include cold compresses, colloidal oatmeal baths and OTC hydrocortisone products.

Caution:

If you have symptoms of Lichen Planopilaris, make an appointment with your primary care physician to begin proper treatment. If you have Lichen Planopilaris of the scalp and have experienced permanent hair loss, speak to a hair loss professional for information on various hair restoration options.

Your finances, job, health, children and relationships can all be large stressors on your life. It is important to know how these stressors may be having an effect on the health of your body and your hair. Some stressors may be easier to manage than others, but it is best to try and limit your stress no matter what problems you may be facing in your day to day life.

The correlation between stress and hair loss is no myth. While there are many other reasons why you may be losing your hair, a large abundance of stress may still cause hair loss. Stress may cause your hormone levels to change which can lead to Telogen Effluvium. Telogen Effluvium is typically a form of hair loss that mostly occurs in pregnant women due to the rapid change of hormone levels associated with pregnancy. Also, stress induced hormone level changes may cause your hair follicles to stay in the resting period for a longer period of time. This imbalance may result in more of your hair falling out than normal a few months later to correct the imbalance caused by stress. While this form of hair loss may not be permanent it may still have a large impact on your hair thinning or falling out.

Extreme amounts of stress may also lead to a form of Trichotillomania. Trichotillomania is the compulsive urge to pull out one's own hair leading to noticeable hair loss and distress that can be caused by anxiety or stress. Some people may pull their hair out as a way of coping with the stressors in their lives and in some severe cases may cause excessive hair loss.

While you may never be able to rid your life completely of stress, there are a few tips you may use to try to limit the amount of stress in your life as well as learn how to deal with that stress. Try eating healthier, exercising and getting an appropriate amount of sleep each night. Living a healthier lifestyle and getting a good night’s sleep may limit the pressure of many of your stressors throughout the day. Also, find time for activities you enjoy to free your mind of the daily grind. It’s not about eliminating the stressors completely, but controlling them and not letting them control you.

Talking to Friends and Family about Your Hair Loss

Hair loss is a part of life for many women that impacts the relationships they have with their family, friends, and colleagues. Many people who haven’t experienced hair loss may not understand the challenge, but friends and family can be great supporters when they understand how and when to help.

•Female Hair Loss

Women often experience anxiety as a result of their hair loss because of concerns around the judgment of others, leading them to seek conventional and alternative solutions to help their hair grow. However, these solutions may not have worked at all or only worked moderately, potentially increasing a sense of isolation and helplessness.

 •The Psychosocial Problem

Research has demonstrated that the emotional and mental issues that surface after hair loss may be more impactful than the hair loss itself. According to David H. Kingsley, PhD., research shows that hair loss often results in lowered self-esteem, increased depression and anxiety, perceived lack of self-control, and avoidance of social gatherings. While many respondents experienced these symptoms in different intensities and with varying duration, a problem experienced by many was the lack of support from friends and family.

Feeling loved, validated, and understood by the people in your life is a vital part of keeping yourself happy and healthy in the face of life’s difficulties, including female hair loss.

•Help from Your Support System

Dr. Kinglsey suggests that family and friends must take the hair loss seriously. Women especially benefit from the unconditional support of their closest friends and family to walk through this difficult time together. Additionally, your physician and hair care consultants can provide encouragement and a listening ear. However, the only way that people in your life will know how to help is if you talk with them about your feelings and tell them the best way to support you.

You may want to begin a conversation by sharing how your hair loss began by describing the effects it has had on your life. Make sure to discuss the emotional impact of the hair loss, specifically speaking of the effects it has had on your relationships. You can explore your reactions to hair loss by thinking through how the stress has changed across time, in different contexts, and with different people.

After you share your side of the story it is then the responsibility of your friends and family members to give a voice to their emotions and thoughts. They may have concerns and ideas that they, too, want to talk about concerning your hair loss. Listen empathically to your loved ones and offer support. Once you have both shared your emotions and reactions, there is common ground to move forward.

At Transitions of Indiana, we understand the impact hair loss can have on a person. That's why we are here to help. Visit our website for more information http://transitionsindy.com/

1. Oysters
A lack of zinc in your diet may lead to hair loss. Oysters have an abundance of zinc. Eating oysters can easily reach the necessary amount of zinc you should have per day in small servings. Other foods that you can eat to fill the zinc quota are nuts and eggs.

2. Spinach
Everyone knows what happens to the cartoon character Popeye when he eats some spinach. He gets big and strong and can take on anything. Well eating spinach may also have positive effects on your hair. Spinach contains the irons and vitamin C your hair follicles need to stay healthy. If you don’t like spinach then broccoli may be a good alternative.

3. Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt is another healthy option that may keep your hair healthy. Greek yogurt contains vitamins B5 and D, these are essential to quality hair follicle health. Other alternatives are cottage cheese and skim milk.

4. Poultry
Hair is nearly all protein so what better food should you eat to help keep your hair nice and strong then chicken which is filled with protein. Poultry contains zinc, iron, and vitamin B. If you currently have a lack of protein in your diet some poultry can fill that void and may even keep your hair healthy. One alternative is lean beef.

5. Sweet Potatoes
