Appearance can be a significant factor in deducing someone’s character. Appearance creates a physical façade and gives away personality cues of an individual. Personality is a derivative of the physical illustration that we choose to portray to others. Looking like a put together, confident individual in job interviews, while job hunting, or in social interactions can make you appear as someone who is successful.

So why is appearance such an important contributing factor to success? The way you dress and act reflects the overall image you create for yourself and can leave a good, or bad first impression. No employer is inclined to hire someone that doesn’t look like they can be taken seriously, or doesn’t present themselves in a respectable manner. Your hairstyle plays a critical role in having a respectable appearance.

Looking “polished” or “pulled together” is a professional’s most important physical asset. Well-managed, healthy hair suggests you care for yourself and take pride in your appearance. A study done by the Harvard Business Review suggested t
hat a common element of business leadership success was good hair. The study showed that if you take a great executive and give them a bad hairstyle perceived leadership effectiveness decreased significantly, while bad leaders that were given a new hairstyle saw a 22% to 38% increase in perceived leadership effectiveness over the course of 6 months. Correlation doesn’t necessarily mean causation, but if you think about the vast majority of successful business leaders you probably would find that most of them had really good hair.

Hair has powerful effects on who we are. When you look good, you certainly feel good. Next time you walk past the mirror, take a look and see if your hair is truly representing what you’re striving to be. Transitions of Indiana understands your self-image is important to who you are. How Appearance Relates to Success

There are tons of tips and tricks on how to care for your hair during the hot and humid summer months and trying to comb your way through the tangle of information can take all season. No worries, we’ve got you covered! Here are the solutions we consistently found that are sure to help maintain your hair’s health and shine while minimizing damage from the seasonal elements.

Condition, condition, condition
Your hair has to replenish its moisture to stay healthy. Before you condition, get an extra boost of moisture by using a non-detergent, cleansing shampoo to avoid fading dyed-hair and a dry scalp. Wet your hair and throw on a conditioner or spritz on a leave-in conditioner before you head out to the pool or gym. Pre-conditioning your hair helps protect it from chlorine and sweat. Wash it out of your hair after your activity and air dry to leave your hair feeling soft and shiny.  It is also recommended that you deep condition your hair at least once a week.

Drink lots of water
Not only is a great conditioner good for your hair but keeping your body hydrated is just as important.  Drinking water keeps your hair hydrated and strong and actually makes it grow faster. During the summer you may find yourself sweating more which means you’re losing water more quickly. Many follow the “drink eight 8-ounce glasses a day” rule  but according to Mayo Clinic, The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate amount for men is roughly 13 cups (3 liters) of total beverages a day while for women it’s about 9 cups (2.2 liters) of total beverages a day. However, this also depends on your level of activity as well so be sure to pay attention to your body and follow doctors' orders.

Protect your hair
Summer is meant to be casual and free so let your hair be too! Over processing or applying heat to your hair every day can cause serious damage to your tresses and make them frizzier. After a wash, use a large-tooth comb to detangle and let your hair air-dry. If you have to use a blow-dryer, attach a nozzle to take away some of the heat. If you have frizzy hair let it show its natural beauty for a change or invest in a stylish wide-brimmed hat to protect from humidity and the other summer elements. You can always just put it up in some fun, simple braids or updos too. You’ll still look stylish and your hair will thank you for the break. Also sleep with your hair up to reduce tangles or sleep with a silk pillow case to reduce friction and retain moisture which can be sapped away by cotton pillow cases.

Essential oils
Essential oils are perfect for balancing and rehydrating your hair. Clear Scalp and Hair Therapy celeb stylist Jen Atkin says, “They don’t contain silicone so they’re more like lotion for the hair and won’t build up or weigh hair down.” Essentials oils can be used to promote hair growth, strengthen hair shafts, soothe irritated scalps and help with dandruff. Plus, they make your hair smell awesome! You can mix in a drop of oil to your conditioner or styling cream. Lavender oil may be a great one for your hair and there are many others! Essential oils are highly potent so they should first be mixed with a base oil, or can be diluted in herbal rinse, or floral water. Here are some of the best essential oils for your hair and how to use them.
