Now that you survived the bipolar spring weather it is time to make the most of your summer days by learning how to care of your hair properly. While anticipating those sizzling summer nights, it is important to know the effects of the sun on your hair. When you are soaking in the chlorinated pool, you may notice your hair dries faster than normal. According to MSN Mind & Body when spotting the signs of damaged hair, you may see the following:

Ø Changes of color

Ø Dry & brittle texture

Ø Split ends

Ø Thinning & fizziness

The best way to avoid summer breakage is to apply a leave-in conditioner to dry hair, and if you want complete protection from the sun, it is suggested to wear a scarf or a hat. When the sun damages hair, it reduces the elasticity and strength. To protect your perfect hair from the summer heat, the Huffington Post recommends to:

Ø Get a summer trim

Ø Avoid products containing sulfates

Ø Use detangling products when brushing

Ø Wear loose buns and ponytails

If you thought winter was bad for your hair, get ready for the summer. Though the heat and sun are a great relief from the brutal cold you’ve endured, it also can damage your scalp and hair.

While the sun is a great source of vitamin D, it may cause dryness, flakiness and brittleness. Just as you protect your skin from the sun, your hair needs protection and maintenance as well. Maintaining healthy scalp and hair doesn’t have to be a hassle if you follow these three tips.

1. Protective Treatments for your Hair:

Shampoo - When washing your hair, opt for shampoos that are sulfate-free or low in sulfate. Sulfate is chemical compound added to shampoos that allows the foam to form and helps wash out byproducts. According to sulfatefreeshampoo.org, sulfate can strip your hair of natural oils causing the hair to feel and look dry. Continuous use of sulfate shampoo can cause long-term damage and irritation to the scalp.

At Transitions, we offer top of the line shampoos that restore your hair with nutrients, like our BioClenz Shampoo, responsible for breaking down waste, reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and adding antioxidants.

Conditioner & Vinegar - Applying a deep conditioner to your hair and scalp is imperative to restoring its nutrients. Conditioning your hair helps replenish your hair with the nutrients that may have been stripped away from the shampoo or the sun.

To maintain cleaner scalp and shiny hair, apply vinegar after you’ve conditioned your hair. Vinegar helps fight off dandruff and relieves hair of dryness and flakiness. It’s recommended to apply vinegar once or twice every month. Our own Final Finish Conditioner includes vinegar to promote a smoother cleaner scalp.

Oils – Oils such as coconut, macadamia, or avocado, are also valuable protective treatments to maintain healthy hair and scalp. These oils work as leave-in conditioners to conserve the nutrients that the sun strips away and preserve the color of your hair.

Heat Protectants
– It can be hard to take a break from heat basedstyling products like blow dryers and flat irons. Opt for heat protectants like our Defend Thermal Protectant. They help keep the nutrients locked in and promote shine and volume.

2. Wraps and Hats to Style your Hair:

It’s recommended to cover up your locks with wraps or hats made of smooth material like cotton or silk. Wraps and hats help your hair preserve its oils and nutrients from the sun’s rays. They are also great accessories to pair with a summer outfit or a playful “loose” hairstyle such as popular fish tale braid or a classic pony tail.

Summer can mean fun in the sun, however there is no fun in the sun if your hair is left unprotected. Improve your hair’s strength and appearance by following these tips. At Transitions of Indiana, we are your direct source for hair restoration. From the products to use, to the procedures that can help you regain stronger and healthier hair, we help guide you to the path that best suits you. Baby, it’s cold outside! As we prepare for this season’s most brutal winds, we must not forget to take care of our hair. In the winter, our hair is exposed to harsh winds and often without the proper protection. From dry roots to damaged ends, this winter season will not be a good friend to our hair.

However, we all don’t want to be confined to our homes all day just to protect our hair. We all want healthy hair every day, anytime, during any season, as we go out. Here are the top-three tips to keep your hair healthy and strong while going out around town this season, particularly dry hair and scalp.

Deep Condition & Moisturize

Harsh winds deplete the oils and nutrients our hair produces for growth and health. A nice deep condition every week replenishes the nutrients back in. After a deep condition, moisturizing your hair with natural oils, such as Argan or lavender, may reduce the dryness of your scalp and split ends as well as aids in the production and flow of nutrients in the hair follicles.

Frequent Warm Showers

During the winter months, your hair may not need to be washed every day. For those with an oily scalp, you should wash your hair 2-3 times a week. For those with less oil, once a week is recommended.

Avoid washing your hair in hot water. Though it may seem relaxing, hot water will dry your hair and scalp causing flakiness. Instead, opt for a warm, and if you’re brave, a cold shower.

Also, it’s very important that you never leave the house with wet hair. The winds will further damage your hair making it brittle, dry and flat.

The Ultimate Hairbrush

Using the right hairbrush is essential to maintaining healthy locks. The number of bristles on a brush or comb are important when detangling or styling. Wide tooth combs are great for detangling wet hair. The vented brush is great to use for blow-drying as it prevents heat damage. Check out seventeen.com's top-ten best hairbrushes for all types of hair textures.

Having healthy hair is a priority. Following these tips can help protect your hair from the cold winter and seasons to come. We all want healthy hair, so let’s take a moment to care for it!

There are tons of tips and tricks on how to care for your hair during the hot and humid summer months and trying to comb your way through the tangle of information can take all season. No worries, we’ve got you covered! Here are the solutions we consistently found that are sure to help maintain your hair’s health and shine while minimizing damage from the seasonal elements.

Condition, condition, condition
Your hair has to replenish its moisture to stay healthy. Before you condition, get an extra boost of moisture by using a non-detergent, cleansing shampoo to avoid fading dyed-hair and a dry scalp. Wet your hair and throw on a conditioner or spritz on a leave-in conditioner before you head out to the pool or gym. Pre-conditioning your hair helps protect it from chlorine and sweat. Wash it out of your hair after your activity and air dry to leave your hair feeling soft and shiny.  It is also recommended that you deep condition your hair at least once a week.

Drink lots of water
Not only is a great conditioner good for your hair but keeping your body hydrated is just as important.  Drinking water keeps your hair hydrated and strong and actually makes it grow faster. During the summer you may find yourself sweating more which means you’re losing water more quickly. Many follow the “drink eight 8-ounce glasses a day” rule  but according to Mayo Clinic, The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate amount for men is roughly 13 cups (3 liters) of total beverages a day while for women it’s about 9 cups (2.2 liters) of total beverages a day. However, this also depends on your level of activity as well so be sure to pay attention to your body and follow doctors' orders.

Protect your hair
Summer is meant to be casual and free so let your hair be too! Over processing or applying heat to your hair every day can cause serious damage to your tresses and make them frizzier. After a wash, use a large-tooth comb to detangle and let your hair air-dry. If you have to use a blow-dryer, attach a nozzle to take away some of the heat. If you have frizzy hair let it show its natural beauty for a change or invest in a stylish wide-brimmed hat to protect from humidity and the other summer elements. You can always just put it up in some fun, simple braids or updos too. You’ll still look stylish and your hair will thank you for the break. Also sleep with your hair up to reduce tangles or sleep with a silk pillow case to reduce friction and retain moisture which can be sapped away by cotton pillow cases.

Essential oils
Essential oils are perfect for balancing and rehydrating your hair. Clear Scalp and Hair Therapy celeb stylist Jen Atkin says, “They don’t contain silicone so they’re more like lotion for the hair and won’t build up or weigh hair down.” Essentials oils can be used to promote hair growth, strengthen hair shafts, soothe irritated scalps and help with dandruff. Plus, they make your hair smell awesome! You can mix in a drop of oil to your conditioner or styling cream. Lavender oil may be a great one for your hair and there are many others! Essential oils are highly potent so they should first be mixed with a base oil, or can be diluted in herbal rinse, or floral water. Here are some of the best essential oils for your hair and how to use them.

If you look into nutrients needed for healthy hair and skin, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and the foods that contain them pop-up in almost all nutrition guides. So, what are they?

Nutrients Needed:

Vitamins
Vitamin C is a builder of the protein collagen. If you have watched or read ads for skin care products you may know that collagen is our skin’s primary connective tissue. When your skin does not get enough collagen, it sags and bags. Vitamin C is also an excellent antioxidant with properties capable of vaporizing free radicals (harmful chemicals) in the body. Free radicals damage body tissue, including hair follicles and skin. http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/skin/vitaminC/

Vitamin A is a healer. It helps repair and restore cells that might have been damaged. One way to get enough Vitamin A is to eat foods packed with beta-carotene, an antioxidant our liver converts into vitamin A.

Another skin “doctor” is Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps the body repair itself, prevents scarring, and is recommended for shiny, healthy looking hair. Vitamin E pumps up our red blood cells so they can haul more nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles and skin.

Vitamin B-Complex is an important supplement to add to your daily diet for overall health. B-Complex contains vitamins B5, B2, and biotin, all which promote cell growth.

Fatty Acids and Minerals
Essential fatty acids, Omega-3s and Omega-6s (GLA), help heal and moisturize skin and hair. Many of us do not get enough Omega-6 or GLA (gamma-linolenic acid). GLA is a moisturizing agent said to reduce hair loss, and is a natural treatment for dandruff, brittle nails, PMS and arthritis.

There are two mighty minerals that may help keep your hair and skin conditioned, known as Zinc and Selenium. Zinc promotes skin repair, fights acne and keeps the complexion looking fresh. The other mineral, Selenium, joins forces with vitamin E to hunt down free radicals and regulate metabolism. The E-selenium team also assists the body in properly processing food to help transport nutrients to our hungry cells.

Food Suggestions

•  VITAMIN C: Citrus fruits, cherries, blueberries, kiwi, red peppers, or black currants
•  VITAMIN A: Dairy products, dried apricots, or mangos
•  BETA-CAROTENE: Carrots, green leafy veggies, dried apricots, sardines, mackerel, or other oily fish
•  VITAMIN E: Spinach, watercress (green leafy veggies), almonds, olive oil, or sunflower seeds
•  B VITAMINS: Wheat germ, a lot of fruits and vegetables, mushrooms
•  FATTY ACIDS: Oily fish (mackerel, wild salmon), black currants, flaxseeds, or evening primrose oil (black currant and evening primrose oil are especially good for omega-6, or GLA)
•  ZINC: Nuts, oysters, or red meat
•  SELENIUM: Cottage cheese, eggs, Brazil nuts, or wholegrain breads

1. Oysters
A lack of zinc in your diet may lead to hair loss. Oysters have an abundance of zinc. Eating oysters can easily reach the necessary amount of zinc you should have per day in small servings. Other foods that you can eat to fill the zinc quota are nuts and eggs.

2. Spinach
Everyone knows what happens to the cartoon character Popeye when he eats some spinach. He gets big and strong and can take on anything. Well eating spinach may also have positive effects on your hair. Spinach contains the irons and vitamin C your hair follicles need to stay healthy. If you don’t like spinach then broccoli may be a good alternative.

3. Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt is another healthy option that may keep your hair healthy. Greek yogurt contains vitamins B5 and D, these are essential to quality hair follicle health. Other alternatives are cottage cheese and skim milk.

4. Poultry
Hair is nearly all protein so what better food should you eat to help keep your hair nice and strong then chicken which is filled with protein. Poultry contains zinc, iron, and vitamin B. If you currently have a lack of protein in your diet some poultry can fill that void and may even keep your hair healthy. One alternative is lean beef.

5. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes may be an excellent option for those in need of more vitamin A. A lack of vitamin A may lead to an itchy scalp and possibly dandruff. Some alternatives to sweet potatoes are apricots, mangoes, carrots, and cantaloupe.
