Fish with high mercury
Some fish can cause thinning hair and brittle nails. The reason being, they may contain high-levels of mercury and if a person were to eat a lot of it, the result may be hair loss. Examples of fish that contain these high doses are swordfish and mackerel.

Sugar
It is a known thing that too much sugar can be bad for you. We have grown up with the constant reminder of the villain sugar. However, did you know why? Besides the risk of cavities, eating a large amount of sugar everyday causes blood sugar levels to increase as well. It becomes a domino effect. The rise in sugar results in a rise of insulin your body pumps-out. Not only that, but it also increases the levels of androgens. Androgen is the male hormone that can shrink hair follicles in both men and women.

High-Glycemic Foods
Starchy white breads, pastas and cakes can trigger similar responses as sugar.

Too much vitamin A
Too much vitamin A may cause hair loss. No – this is not a typo. Ultra high doses of an individual vitamin A supplement can be dangerous. Alternative recommendation is to take a daily multi-vitamin instead.

Little protein
Your hair and nails are made of protein. Your body needs protein every day for different functions, but unfortunately, our bodies don't store protein. Therefore, it's necessary to intake a certain amount of protein to keep your body running strong. Protein can be found in not only meat, but also from beans, tofu, spinach, lentils and more. Fun fact- foods with a particular amino acid that creates keratins is also helpful; for instance, pork, broccoli, wheat germs and red peppers. 

Too little iron and zinc
Lacking in both zinc and iron can lead to hair and nail problems. These minerals found in red meats, some seafood and some beans are essential to the formulation of keratin. A neat trick to check your zinc level is to check your nails. The little white flecks in your nails are a good indicator for a lack of zinc in your diet.
